Corporate Social Responsibility (MADR 3014) FALL 2022

This course examines principles and practice of corporate social responsibility, as they apply to organizations domestically and abroad. Coverage includes the fundamentals of sustainable development; system theory; business ethics; individual versus societal interests; human rights, including discrimination and diversity issues; labor and employment issues; consumer protection; environmental issues, including climate change and water scarcity; public and private governance and transparency; local and global partnerships; the importance of peace for sustainability; international and national politics, public policy, and government regulation of business. This course is designed to develop the student’s capacity to recognize and reason about sustainability issues connected with international business management. Specifically, students will be able to 1) recognize potential sustainability dilemmas arising from a cross-cultural context, 2) understand the factors in a cross-cultural context that inform a manager’s choice of action, and 3) apply knowledge of the cross-cultural context to come to a solution of the sustainability dilemma. Students are expected to prepare for each lecture/ discussion session by mastering the assigned reading and/or case material. Those enrolling are expected to participate actively in class analysis and discussion. The various pedagogical venues will include guest speakers, videos, and cases.  This course will allow the students to start thinking about cross-cultural business ethics and the role they play in business today.
